Image intensifiers consist of a vacuum tube with photocathode input. This consists of multi-alkali or semiconductor layers. When photons strike the photocathode, electrrons are released via the photoelectric effect. These electrons are then accelerated towards a phosphor screen resulting in the release of light. This light consists of meny photons for each incident photon.
