Mobile World Congress: ADVA Optical Networking to Highlight Virtualization in Radio Access Backhaul Networks

ADVA Optical Networking announced today that it will showcase virtualization in radio access backhaul networks at this year's Mobile World Congress. The demonstration will reveal how Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) can effectively eliminate the restrictions of hardware-coded networks by using Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) technology.

Decoupling innovation from hardware implementation radically shifts the value proposition of radio access backhaul networks and adds unprecedented flexibility. The showcase is underpinned by a new Ethernet access device that ADVA Optical Networking is developing. The device is optimized for Radio Access Network (RAN) backhaul applications and is engineered to host various virtual network functions. The demonstration will be showcased at ADVA Optical Networking's booth in hall 7 (7H31).

"Our AnyCellTM Connectivity technology already provides automated configuration, advanced service assurance and precise synchronization distribution. With this demonstration, we take a further step towards network optimization. Combining NFV with proven RAN connectivity creates value far beyond providing such capability in isolation," said Stephan Rettenberger, vice president, marketing, ADVA Optical Networking. "That's why this demonstration is so important. It shows just how much potential is here. MNOs have a genuine opportunity to reassess their RAN architectures. With NFV technology, MNOs can inject their access and backhaul networks with new business opportunities and provide their customers with a far better user experience. Hosting virtual functions at the edge of the RAN offers faster service innovation, more efficient resource utilization and significantly increased space efficiency."

ADVA Optical Networking's demonstration at Mobile World Congress provides a glimpse into what virtualization at the RAN edge looks like and how it can be used. Providing IT and cloud-computing capabilities in combination with mobile backhaul and in such close proximity to mobile subscribers generates tantalizing business opportunities for MNOs. Functions such as content caching, advanced network security and RAN optimization will greatly enhance user experience and reduce operational complexity. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute is supporting this approach with the implementation of the Mobile Edge Computing initiative. This initiative is designed to promote open architectures and application programming in mobile multi-vendor environments.

The 'hands-on' demonstration showcases ADVA Optical Networking's AnyCellTM Connectivity technology with integrated programmability and server capacity hosting a software-based virtual LTE base station appliance. One potential application for this arrangement is the provisioning of femtocells at enterprise premises, including a virtual firewall, content caching and other functions. Visitors to the showcase will experience a live demo that reveals how NFV can reduce complexity, increase flexibility and open new service opportunities.
